About
DUO – acronym for De Upcycling Outfit – is a project by Carla Maiolo, born from the need for different narratives.
Each garment is re-made by hand in a Milan-based studio, using only existing materials or deadstock fabrics, with no mass production involved.
Deconstructing and reinterpreting discarded elements through artisanal techniques means transforming them into unique garments.
Each creation takes shape from the material itself, which suggests lines, directions, and textures.
This process rejects the logic of overproduction and puts the focus on gesture, quality, and detail.
Through this approach, time regains its value, while attention is restored to creativity, Italian tailoring tradition, and the connection with those who share the same vision and choose to wear a garment that tells a story.
Biography
Carla Maiolo is a textile designer with over ten years of experience as a prototype tailor.
Born in Catanzaro and based in Milan, she studied pattern-making and tailoring before working in some of the most renowned ateliers.
Her research also extends to site-specific textile installations, a natural evolution of her practice: treating space like a custom-made garment, where form and function are woven together.
The two practices — installation and upcycling — continuously inform one another, sharing the same attentive and material-driven perspective.
